ND News: Google Gmail available to alumni

The Notre Dame alumni email service is changing in October.  We will begin offering an improved alumni email service based on Google's web-based email program - Gmail.  This new service will offer actual email accounts, instead of email forwarding.  And, you'll be able to keep your @alumni.nd.edu address.

There are several reasons for the change to Gmail.  We have heard from many of you that the current email forwarding system is not meeting your needs. We expect the Gmail solution to provide a more reliable service, with more robust functionality.  In addition, the University recently transitioned the ND student email system to Gmail.

Other benefits of the Notre Dame Gmail service include:

  • 6 GB of e-mail storage space
  • Powerful anti-spam system
  • Easy file attachment for outgoing messages
  • Reliable, secure e-mail service
  • Email address of yourname@alumni.nd.edu
What is the Transition Process?
Your email forwarding account is still active and running through the Irish Online system, which is powered by Kintera. To view your current e-mail forwarding configuration, go to the My Email Forwarding Account page. (This will require you to login to Irish Online.)

The Alumni Association will transition your email forwarding account to the new Notre Dame Gmail system in October. Prior to the switch, you will receive an email outlining the process and giving you a temporary password
that you will use to access your new ND Gmail account.  Once you log into your new account, you can then change your password.

The Notre Dame Gmail account also allows for email forwarding. If you choose, you will be able to configure your Notre Dame Gmail to forward messages to a third-party email address, such as your Yahoo or work email account.

Just like with email forwarding, the new Notre Dame Gmail service will be free for all Notre Dame alumni.
