Fall 2008

Our Mailbag Overfloweth, Part I

It was shaping up to be a slow news day when I emailed the class asking for input last July – boy was I wrong! I had an overwhelming response – too much to fit in my space allotted – so I’ll try to fit it all in over the next few issues. Here goes (deep breath)! St. Ed’s alum John O’Loughlin was named president, targeted media and senior vice president, marketing of the Los Angeles Times in February. Prior to joining the LA Times in 2005, John worked for the Chicago Tribune where he had started his career after ND. Paige (Cooper) and Jim Fitton welcomed baby Mitchell Cooper Fitton on April 14th joining big brother Billy (3). Paige is still working as an early childhood special education teacher for Elgin U-46 Schools, but is on maternity leave until January. Lance Madison was promoted to partner at Boulay, Heutmake, Zibell & Co, an independent accounting and consulting firm in MN. Ruth (Hanlon) Beier assisted in an amazing fundraiser for the family of a 12 year old girl fighting cancer (supportHer.info). With a little ND networking, Ruth arranged for Jim Caviezel (the actor who played Jesus in the ‘Passion of the Christ’ and a ND supporter) to send a personal videotaped message to the fundraiser. Jim had been buddies with the mom of the little girl battling cancer. The fundraiser generated $20,000 for this family! Amy Dice moved with husband Ken '87 and kids Catie (3 1/2) and Kenny (2) to Portland OR so Ken could take a job as vice president with Nike. After serving as an attorney and CPA for fifteen years in the northeast, Joseph Lakatos recently became an associate professor for the Univ of North Carolina. Joseph made the change after fighting non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for 3 years (14 months of chemo followed by total body radiation and a bone marrow transplant) and adds that he would not have made it without the faith built at ND and the spirit of where he will always call home. Chris Clark emailed updates about himself and friends Steve Murphy and John "Beef" Meagher. Chris is a trader at the Chicago Board of Trade and just welcomed his fourth child, a baby girl. Steve, father of four, is a real estate broker/developer in Mishawaka. John is an attorney in Florida and may be moving to Chicago in the fall. Dave "Squared" Devine begins his 2nd year on the ND faculty serving as director of undergraduate studies for the civil engineering program. He serves as the Chair of the Committee on Licensure and Ethics for the American Society of Civil Engineers. Although this summer he stayed in the US he has now visited over 25 different countries. Patrick Olmstead was a founding member, chairman, and vice president of the non-profit Veterans of Valor (veteransofvalor.org). He also served as the attorney for its corporate formation and for obtaining IRS recognition of its tax-exempt status. Patrick recently left the organization after a successful year of fundraising and service to wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Pat Perrella left Citibank in NYC to join the MBA program at ND. He now works with all of our MBA finance students as their career coach and also relationship manager for the firms that recruit them. If folks are on campus they should look Pat up! Laura (Ryan) and Peter Claude recently relocated to San Francisco. Peter is a partner with PwC in their pharmaceutical and life sciences advisory practice. Laura is fully retired from the career world and she and their children (Robby, 11, Maggie 10, and Joe 8) are enjoying the new location and meeting new friends. David Prinzivalli is working for The Blackstone Group and enjoying the NJ area with his wife and 3 kids (6, 4 and 1). Paula (Gile) and J.C. Trybus '89 welcomed Annelouise Sophia on February 2. She joins siblings Matthew, Kate, Joey, and Andrew. All are well and joyful that she is here! In the entertainment section of the news, Todd Tucker’s fourth book and first novel, ‘Over and Under’ was published recently, you can check it out at Amazon. It is the story of two boys in an Indiana factory town torn apart by a strike in 1979. Also, movie rights to Kevin Guilfoile’s first novel ‘Cast of Shadows’ has just been optioned by two of the writers from Grey's Anatomy with the hope of developing it as a feature film, while his second novel, ‘The Thousand’, will be published next year. Kevin is in La Grange IL with his wife and two sons.
